I just saw Zdeno Chara lift the Stanley Cup

June 16, 2011

And it hurt in my heart, just as much as I thought it would.

But then I saw the Cup make its way to Tummy Thomas.

That didn’t hurt so much. The fat kid won. The guy who didn’t make the NHL until his 30s won. The guy who played backup the year he signed his big NHL contract and was called all kinds of names by the fans won. The dude from Flint, Michigan, that’s not the one who just opens your front door and waltzes in when he visits Canada won. The ginger won. The underdog won.

Every Chara has a silver lining.

Not only did Thomas win, but he has just had one of the all time great seasons by a goalie. His stats were mind numbing from game one of the regular season right up until (and including) last night. He’s going to win the Vezina to go along with his Conn Smythe and his Cup ring. He may have sealed his hall of fame credentials right there.

If there are any Habs fans still calling him overrated today, they are just plain wrong. He’s not lucky, he’s not the beneficiary of biased refs, he’s not flash in the pan…he’s great. He’s the best goalie in the world today and his hardware proves it. Hockey, beyond the stats is about results. We can skew stats to mean whatever we want them to mean, at the end of the day wins and results are what truly counts and Thomas had a monopoly on both stats, wins and results. Good on the fat kid. May he never have another season like this again.

Now only if the guy from Flint on the Devils making $5 million a year could do something other than shoot the puck high and wide and take weak hooking calls on the powerplay…
