Pens – Habs Game 5: How’s your heart?

May 9, 2010

The Habs lost what was without question the best game they played this series, and now we sit at the brink of elimination.

This playoff run has been a little crazy. Instead of being swept in the first round, the 8th seeded, 19th overall Habs have already played 12 playoff games (which is 12 more than the Maple Leafs played, etc). Monday’s 13th game is do or die, just like the 5th, 6th, and 7th games were. My brain says their luck has run out. My heart thinks they will win the series. Don’t know how they’re going to manage it with the possible loss of Hal Gill on top of everything, but you gotta have faith, I guess. We’re doing bullet points again because otherwise my postgame posts would be completely unreadable:

  • The Habs controlled the play for almost the entire game.
  • They didn’t contain Malkin. Geno (gayest nickname ever, by the way, and I don’t mean gay in the good way) was all over the ice, skating around, over and under the Habs and creating quite the difficult situation for our midget squad.
  • That big tree Bill Guerin being in Halak’s face the whole time is a problem. Not a Dustin Byfuglien-sized problem, but a problem nonetheless.
  • Plekanec needs to get going, like, two games ago.
  • Seriously, how are they going to do this without Hal Gill?
  • Fleury played well, but he’s still their most beatable player.
  • The Penguins’ road record in the playoffs combined with the Habs’ home record is… not promising.
  • Halak has gotten into Sid’s head. So much so that he can’t even score into an empty net.
  • Cammalleri is soooooooooooooooooooooo tiny… and is playing HUGE in these playoffs.
  • AK46 has been playing progressively better as this series goes on. If only he were smarter.
  • PK made some huge mistakes and then made twice the number of good plays.
  • When RDS showed Markov at the game, my heart skipped a beat. I miss him…
  • Benoit Pouliot’s mustache is disgusting. 70’s porn star, much?
  • MaxLap’s chirping used to annoy me but in the playoffs, I’m all about it. Perhaps because he’s producing as well. Where has that Max been all year?

    Cammalleri isn’t tiny! He’s just svelte 😉 He’s like a fucking ninja.

Fucking ninja. Lethal, but compact. Space-efficient, if you will.

      I like it.

My heart’s fine. Les Boys have, if nothing else, served notice this year. If Markov and Spacek (and now maybe Gill) had been fit the entire post-season, we’d have slaughtered the over-rated Pens, who rely too much on PP advantages it seems, despite all their superior talent, which the Habs have proven can be overcome and effectively shut down. If we can tweak the offensive firepower of the Habs in the offseason, we will seriously contend again next year, barring any further post-season injuries. I think the D core, with the exception of MAB (and maybe Hamr), is solid. If the Pens are playing like this against a healthy team that watches this series at all, they’re not going to re-Cup this year, which suits me fine as I’ve had a hate on for Sid since he was in the QMJHL, and would rather not be subjected to him or his worshippers again this year here in Nova Scotia. Do you suppose by age 30 he might actually grow up? One can only hope. I enjoyed his whiff of the empty net. Was beautiful to watch.

Malkin, to his credit, is a rich and successful professional athlete, which is good for him on account of he is completely unattractive on the physical level, and therefore otherwise unlikely to ever score off-ice. The nickname doesn’t really help.

Pleks is busy running D vs. the Pens front line, but he damned well does try and is an effective two-way forward. We do need him to find a way to score at the same time though. Without Hal Gill, even with Spacek back, I think we lose game 6. You have to take into account the Pens’ away record and the Habs’ home ice records post-season as well.

Cammy is worth his money. Markov’s absence is killing our PP and PK. I’d really be okay with offloading AK46 off-season, and I’m not digging Pouliot either. He’s ineffective when we need him, and he seems to drag down the Gomez/Gionta line because he’s reluctant to get physical. Max is finally fun to watch, which is good, because I seem to be one of the few fans that liked him prior to the post-season.

I hope they prove me wrong and win game 6. I’d really love to be eating crow come Monday.

Trust me, even the ugliest professional athletes score off the ice/court/pitch/field/etc. Like, a LOT.

    Dislike: Benny’s ‘stache
    Like: Cammy ninja
Why hasn’t anyone said that before?
