Pens – Habs Game 2: And home ice is stolen again…

May 2, 2010

therangersfan said the following to me as the game was coming to an end: “The greatest trick the Habs ever pulled was convincing the world home ice didn’t exist. And like that, poof… It’s gone.”

Something about this team… not only do I love that they’re underdogs, I love their character. They’re playing like they want to earn it, not like they’re entitled to it. I just can’t get over how hard they’re working and how calmly they’re playing. They shouldn’t have had a shot against Washington, and they shouldn’t have a shot against Pittsburgh. It’s too early to say that they do have a shot against the defending champs, of course, but hey, one down, three to go.

After they beat Washington, I was all “why aren’t they celebrating more?”

Now I know. They’re serious about this mountain they’re climbing. We fans are just enjoying the ride.

Say what you will about luck and Halak… this team is playing like they know how it is. And the more they do that, the more their opponents lose their heads. They know their weaknesses, they know their strengths, and they’re there for each other. No passengers.

I can’t say enough about PK and Cammalleri and Gionta and Gomez and Gorges and… well, you don’t have all night, and I have work in the morning.

Bob Gainey must sleep pretty comfy these days. There aren’t a lot of Habs fans who can say they didn’t question this team’s makeup at least once during the year. Case and point: The last four games when the 6 seed was theirs for the taking and, well, you know the rest.
But when Bob decided to blow this team up last summer he made sure everyone had something in common and as much as the media would label that similarity as being small, i am referring to winning.
Aside from Cammy, who seems to not realize he has little experience at this time of year, the whole group of newbies had won Cups before. It took an up and down year with a SHIT load of injuries for this group to learn each other the way they needed to in order to win together.
But they have and it’s fun to be a part of as a fan.
    Thanks Bob.

I guess you missed the (now somewhat dated) film reference. 🙂

Maybe I just thought it was excellent.

They’re not celebrating more because there’s still a long way to go. I think it was Dickie Moore who came into the room and said after every playoff series win in 86 “Congratulations, you haven’t won a thing.” That really puts the guys back into reality. One series down is great, now it’s time to work on the next. Gio knows. Gomez knows. Gill knows. Moen knows. No more can you win series depending on goalies only these days, they have to play as a team. Will they win the series? Who knows. But they won’t stop trying.
