Happy Birthday, Habs!

December 4, 2009

There will be no pregame or postgame post for game 29. Our Montreal Canadiens are 100 years old today, so we’re going to celebrate. Forget about the game, the injuries, the playoffs and the ugly possibility of ending the season in ninth place.

Instead, watch the ceremony at 6pm and get goosebumps and tear up with me with me.

How many other NHL teams have this much history, this many championships and this many crazy fans? Are the Chicago Blackhawks a religion? No. Do the Boston Bruins have 24 fucking Stanley Cups? No. Was Jean Beliveau ever a New York Ranger? No. Were the Toronto Maple Leafs voted “Canada’s Team” this week? No. Will the Detroit Red Wings ever boast this much love, or hate? No.

I have so much love and respect for all the Original Six teams, even Toronto, but you have to agree that Montreal is the one with the greatest past, even if its present is not so lovely.

I don’t even know what 100 years means.

Check out this tribute, by CuzwewantTo25, and Happy Friday Habs Day.

Care to listen to a Franco-Ontarian and a California born-Toronto raised-McGiller try to do just to the centennial? That was our podcast this week. The link is on the front page of my blog (which is nicely linked to on this blog).

I’m at work! I’m listening to it on the radio right now! I wanna go sneak in via an air duct! Regardless of what happens tonight in the game, oh man… I’m so hyper right now.

Best comment ever: The Habs have been around 100 years. They’ve won 24 championships in a century. How many other professional teams can boast that rate of success?

    We’ll reach 25 yet…

The New York Yankees. That’s it.
Pretty esteemed company to be in.
