Potvin sucks: NYR fan for a day (Anaheim Ducks at New York Rangers October 11)

October 14, 2009

Thanks to a friend who will henceforth be known as therangersfan, got to see my two-favourite-players-when-they-were-Habs, Saku and Higgins, on their new teams. At Madison Square Garden, the World Most Famous Arena!.

Kind of an odd feeling, going to a game where you like both teams.

I’ve never been to a hockey arena as cold as Madison Square Garden, the World’s Most Famous Arena!. Seriously. Freezer. (therangersfan: And yet the ice is still so terrible.)

The warm-up.

The warm-up.

MSG, TWMFA! is really quiet compared to the Bell Centre. Could be the acoustics. Could be the fact that there is about 75% less crazy to be found among Rangers fans than Habs fans on any given night. Could just be that the game itself was a quiet one.

Not starting that night: King Henrik

Not starting that night: Henrik Lundqvist

I was hoping to see Lundqvist, but Torts was hoping otherwise. The Ducks had just beaten Philly in a shootout less than 20 hours before this game. They were pretty much sleeping, except J.S. Giguere.

Sidebar: The Anaheim Ducks currently have a Number One Goalie and another Number One Goalie, while the Toronto Maple Leafs currently have… No Goalies.

D-zone faceoff guy: Koivu...

D-zone faceoff guy: Koivu...

Since Anaheim was napping, there wasn’t much for the Rangers to do but practice getting stoned by Giggy. The Habs don’t need to practice that, they’re already quite good at it. It took a while for things to get going. By the end of the second period, therangersfan: I’m glad I don’t have to go in and face Tortorella after this period.

...except when in the penalty box.

...except when in the penalty box.

New York woke up, scored three goals in the third (two PP goals and an empty netter), left the Ducks behind and Steve Valiquette got a shut-out. The third period was pretty great.

Rangers win.

Rangers win.

Also great: I’d read about Dancing Larry and the Potvin Sucks! chant, and heard about how Wade Redden gets booed. Booing Wade Redden is not an arena “tradition” unique to MSG TWMFA!, but the other two are and I am all about stuff like that.

Koivu and Higgins didn’t exactly have career nights, but I miss them anyway.

Higgins

Higgins, now with weird mullet thing going on

Here’s why we currently love the Rangers, other than their being an Original Six team and New York being the best city on earth and Madison Square Garden being The World’s Most Famous Arena!:

They were on a four-game winning streak after that game… and Toronto waddled into town. Didn’t get to see the shellacking the Blueshirts gave the Blueshirtedgoons, but did get text updates.

therangersfan: NYR 7 – TOR 2 (F)
theactivestick: Potvin sucks! Who scored?
therangersfan: Everyone.

Come back whenever you’d like. Since the Rangers have won with you in the building, you are now Good Luck (capital G, capital L).

Thanks again for dinner, too. Mmm, tentacles.
